Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe retired this past weekend. There is so much to say about this man, his career in sports journalism, and what he has meant to NBA fans, that it’s truly impossible for me to do his career any justice with my limited ability.
It is not an exaggeration to say that he is a living, breathing NBA encyclopedia. He has probably forgotten more about the league’s history than the rest of us pecking away at our computers will ever learn. As an example of that fact, here is Bob, before an episode of PTI back in March, breaking down the 1972 NBA draft, 40 years later, as if it happened just last moth.

There. Discussion over. Jeremy was just doing what every free agent in the fucking world does, which is consider his options. That contract will net him a lot of money, more than he’s ever seen. But the money’s not the issue. We can bark all day about what Lin’s true talent is, but his basement ain’t as low as some seem think.
It’s what he meant to New York, what he meant to the Knicks. He’s somebody who you can get excited about, no strings attached. A guy who can make his name in this city. Sure you picked him up as a free agent, but there were no expectations for this young man. So when he blew up for the first time in New York, he was doing it as a Knick. That’s a special thing to see.
While it’s hard to pick which is the most revelatory, the fact that New York’s brass had “spoken to [Lin] and his representatives only once this month” before a brief phone call from general manager Glen Grunwald late Tuesday night to confirm the team’s decision and wish him luck seems like a pretty instructive bit of information
